Human hair soak up oil spill

Thanks to reader Sergio Salazar for sending this link to an organization, Matter of Trust, that collects hair to soak up oil spills. You can send human hair (like from salons) or pet hair to them (they have warehouses all along the Gulf coast) and volunteers stuff them into nylon stockings to make booms that soak up oil.

This Washington Post article asks whether this scheme will make a dent but at the same time says that there aren't enough booms for all the parishes that want to protect their piece of the coastline...

Anybody want to start a hair collection in El Paso?

  1. Thanks for posting this... there'll be salon owners that'll read this and collect hair... Unfortunately articles like the Washington posts are intended to discourage people to do something about anything... on the other hand government and centralized agencies have proof inefficient on matters like this... if anyone is interested on doing something like this please feel free to email me at s.salazar.b77@gmail.com

  2. Is there anywhere in the uk that is collecting hair for the oil spill? I work in a large salon in norfolk and we were wondering where to take it if at all!

  3. Sadly, the hair idea is a flop. Engineers have found that hair booms sink and they won't be using them. I wonder if there's another use for hair clippings....
