Green movies: Sad and funny

I saw two movies this weekend and by coincidence (I swear) they were both green movies. The first was Furry Vengeance, a kid movie that I thought was going to be barely watchable (readers who are parents will commiserate) but that turned out to be a nice fable about animals fighting back when a phony "green" construction company tries to destroy the forest.

This made me think how many of today's kids' movies have a green theme (Hoot, Happy Feet, Over The Hedge, etc...Send your favorite!) and that makes me very hopeful for the next generation.

The second movie I watched was The Cove. I had postponed watching it because I thought it'd be a major bummer and possibly preachy. It's neither. It's horrifying, of course (the blood in the photo below is real) because it's about the mass slaughter of dolphins with crude harpoons in a secretive cove in Japan. But it's so action-oriented that it makes you want to be part of the fight. (The biggest thing you can do: Don't go to Sea World.)

The main argument of Japan for continuing these senseless killings is that it's tradition; it's part of their culture. That's the same argument that Spain (and Mexico) have for bullfighting. Some traditions, however, need to fade away.

  1. Really? Furry Vengeance is watchable? I am dreading the day my son (now 20 months) begs me to take him to see horrible animated movies...
